Message the higher the velocity. The smaller cross-section of the pipe allows a volume of air to move through it faster, which is benefitial at lower rpm. A lot of people confuse increased velocity with backpressure. No one wants back pressure, just high velocity. Don't think I'm telling you that a 1" pipe is better because it has an even higher velocity. There is a fine balance between low restriction/high velocity pipe and a simple bottleneck/high backpressure. I think with a TD05 the fine balance rests around 2.5".

At low rpms, the motor (essentially an air pump) does not create enough air to create a high velocity in a 3" pipe, it simply stagnates, and the air exiting the motor does not have a free-flow (theres another term I'm looking for here, feel free to jolt my memory). Most people would be satisified with 2.5" downpipes, unless moving towards radical turbo setups and high modifications.
